Migrants and refugees are not “problems to be solved,” but vulnerable individuals who must be treated with respect and compassion, said participants this week at a United Nations symposium co-sponsored by the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The event, held Jan. 22 at the United Nations Secretariat in New York, United States, was the Fourth Annual Symposium on the Role of Religion and Faith-based Organizations in International Affairs, and it brought together some 250 representatives from the UN community, religious groups, and non-governmental organizations.

Church leaders are encouraging Seventh-day Adventists to dig deeper into the meaning of “religious freedom” as the global church prepares to commemorate Religious Liberty Sabbath on January 20.
Dr. Ganoune Diop, director of Public Affairs and Religious Liberty department, says that, for Adventists, religious liberty has always been about more than just legal principles or constitutional philosophy.

Thousands of Seventh-day Adventist young people around the world are learning to be the hands and feet of Jesus, to “Be the Sermon,” as the Global Youth Day (GYD) theme states. Through coordinated efforts in each of the 13 World Church regions, youth are recapturing a vision for service and learning there is more to faith than simply going to church.
This initiative began in 2013 under former Seventh-day Adventist Youth Director Gilbert Cangy’s leadership. It is one day set aside for youth (primarily ages 15-25) to specifically focus on doing acts of kindness in their communities.

The first adult bone marrow transplant has been successfully completed at Loma Linda University (LLU) Health. The patient, Merlin Decoud, from Moreno Valley, was successfully transplanted on Dec. 7, 2017. “Every step of the way we could not have asked for better people here,” Decoud said. “Cancer is a terrible thing to experience but Loma Linda has been a great experience.”

Loma Linda University Medical Center – Murrieta (LLUMC – Murrieta), which opened in 2011, was granted a three-year accreditation by the Commission on Cancer (COC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) for its cancer program.
CoC accreditation challenges cancer programs to enhance the care they provide by addressing patient-centered needs and measuring the quality of care they deliver against national standards. Accreditation is earned every three years by participating in a survey process. The program must meet or exceed 34 CoC quality care standards and maintain levels of excellence in patient-centered care.

As another year draws to a close, I would like to send my warmest greetings to our worldwide Seventh-day Adventist church family, and take a few moments to reflect on this unique moment in time—a time when we leave the old year behind and step into the new.
Certainly, we have all seen that life on this earth often brings a mixture of the good, and the not so good, of joy and of sorrow, of triumph, and sometimes, of tragedy. As those who love the Lord and follow Him, however, we have the wonderful promise of His continual presence through it all, as He has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Heb. 13:5).

During the past several decades, the Seventh-day Adventist Church has clearly stated through officially voted statements and guidelines its Biblical position regarding human sexuality. Recently, questions have been raised regarding the beliefs and practices of the Church in regard to homosexuality and related issues. This statement re-affirms our Biblical stand and encourages a Christ-like approach to this challenging topic.

Recent video evidence of an active slave market in the north African country of Libya has focused international attention on what has, until now, been a largely unpublicized human rights tragedy, says a Seventh-day Adventist Church spokesperson.
“What this video reveals is the shocking and ruthless exploitation of vulnerable human beings; refugees who are desperately seeking an escape from poverty and violence,” says Nelu Burcea, who is the Adventist Church’s liaison to the United Nation and an associate director of its Public Affairs and Religious Liberty (PARL) department.
