International Day of Disabled Persons, a global celebration of different abilities

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) there are over 1 billion people—roughly 15% of the world’s population—who are disabled. In many cultures, people who experience physical challenges are often marginalized and rejected. This issue is so significant that in 1992 the United Nations (UN) adopted December 3rd as International Day of Disabled Persons, an annual event dedicated to promoting awareness of, and equal rights for, those with some form of limitation.

Loma Linda Celebrates 50th Anniversary of Organ Transplantation Program

Loma Linda University Health, an Adventist-managed institution in Loma Linda, California, United States, celebrated its 50-year legacy of providing organ transplantation to inland Southern California, and beyond. The anniversary luncheon on Nov. 19 highlighted the marvel of medical innovators and skilled surgeons as well as the generosity of donors and donor families.

TED-Style Life-Enrichment Talks Attract Hundreds in Australia

More than 800 people attended a TED-style weekend of presentations held in Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia, Nov. 4-5, and more than double that number watched online.

PROPHETICA 2017 featured a diverse list of presenters, including award-winning cookbook author Sue Radd, leading lifestyle disease researcher Ross Grant, radio host and history buff Lyle Southwell, and former punk rocker turned pastor David Asscherick.

Church Leaders in the Middle East Respond to Egypt Mosque Attack

Rick McEdward, president of the Middle East and North Africa Union of the Seventh-day Adventists, strongly condemned the atrocious terrorist attack that took place on Nov. 24, 2017, on the Al-Rawdah mosque during Friday prayers in the town of Bir al-Abed, in Sinai, Egypt.

“We strongly condemn the criminal act, which was committed within a sacred place of worship and prayer,” said McEdward.

US Adventist University Partners to Train Physicians in Africa

Loma Linda University Health is partnering with other Christian universities and hospitals in Africa and the United States to create a new program to support specialty training for physicians in family medicine, internal medicine and pediatrics in Africa.

During its inaugural meeting earlier this month, the Christian Academy of African Physicians (CAAP) was established to develop medical and spiritual curricula and to create partnerships that support the creation of new Christian primary care training programs for the continent of Africa.

Opioids Epidemic Discussed at Adventist University Event

One of United States most prominent health topics came into focus last month with a panel of Loma Linda University Health experts identifying issues surrounding the opioid addiction and abuse epidemic, setting the stage for a discussion of proper pain management by health professionals and addressing underlying matters in addiction.

US Adventist University Shares Poverty Attack Plan at National Event

Two La Sierra University social work faculty members and a university church pastor gave a presentation at a national conference recently on ways churches and social workers can join forces to better meet the needs of impoverished populations.

Associate Professor of Social Work Daphne Thomas, Assistant Professor of Social Work Marni Straine, and university alum Steve Hemenway, a La Sierra University Church pastor, led a workshop titled “Bridging Gaps: Social Workers Provide Solutions in Faith-based Arenas” for the National Association of Christian Social Workers convention.

Florida Hospital, Florida Conference and Local Media Group Host Second Collection Drive for Puerto Rico

Florida Hospital, in partnership with Cox Media Group Orlando and the Florida Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, hosted a second “Blessings for Puerto Rico” collection drive in the US state of Florida, where Central Floridians showed their generous support for the ongoing Puerto Rico relief efforts by filling a total of eight 24-foot box trucks with dozens of pallets of donated items.

Adventist Attorneys Admitted to the Bar of US Supreme Court

On November 1, a group of eight Seventh-day Adventist attorneys from across the United States were admitted as members to the bar of the United States Supreme Court. The event was organized by the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists Office of General Counsel.

General Counsel, Karnik Doukmetzian sponsored their admission and officially moved the names during the ceremony and Chief Justice John Roberts admitted the attorneys. Those admitted were Harold Cleveland Jr., Allison Dichoso, Theodore Flo, Meredith Jobe, Maria McPhaull, Josue Pierre, Leesa Thomas, Jesus Uriarte.

Adventists Mark Reformation’s 500th Anniversary with Launch of New Book

Exactly 500 years to the day after Martin Luther is said to have posted his 95 theses at the door of Wittenberg Castle church, Seventh-day Adventists have published a new book that explores the profound—and complicated—legacy of the Protestant Reformation.

The book, A Conversation on the Reformation, Christian Identity, and Freedom of Conscience, was launched October 31 at the church’s General Conference world headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland, by Ganoune Diop, director of Public Affairs and Religious Liberty (PARL). In introducing the publication, Diop said the goal was to study the impact of the Reformation on a core Adventist value—the freedom of religion and belief.
