How do you help a small poor town devastated by a powerful storm? How do you provide relief for families who lost almost everything during the storm? The Seventh-day Adventist Church in Loiza, Puerto Rico, came up with a plan to assist hundreds of people soon after Hurricane Maria hit last September. The category 5 winds of the storm battered the entire island shutting down power and communication towers for days and weeks to follow.

Local church elders across the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Inter-America will take part in a comprehensive training program to train them to better assist pastors in leading the more than 22,000 churches and congregations across the territory.
The online event, themed “Discipling the Flock”, will take place on Saturday, Feb. 17, 2018. The program will feature messages, seminars, and presentations to enhance the ministry of more than 30,000 local church elders who help shepherd the 3.7 million membership in the IAD.

Following several days of meetings, presentations, and dialogue, top Seventh-day Adventist leaders representing the world church’s headquarters along with its world divisions concluded the 11th Global Leadership Summit in Lisbon, Portugal, held on February 6-7, 2018.
Participants at this year’s summit grappled with multiple questions including: Which comes first, mission or church organization? Is it possible to be faithful and loyal to the church, while at the same time adhering to personal convictions? How does the denomination achieve a balance between a centralized church structure and the needs of various fields around the world?

A new, innovative deep brain stimulation (DBS) system, called Vercise, was successfully implanted in an 81-year-old patient with Parkinson’s Disease at Loma Linda University Health (LLUH), the first such procedure in Southern California and the fourth in the nation to utilize the DBS device to treat Parkinson’s.
LLUH neurologist Khashayar Dashtipour, and neurosurgeon Miguel López-González, performed the ground-breaking implant of the Vercise device last week.

Puerto Rico will forever have two stories: one before Hurricane Maria and one after.
The before story seems very distant, and the after story is still developing, says Pastor Jose Alberto Rodríguez, president of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Puerto Rico.
Rodríguez never thought he would see his beloved island destroyed and shutdown completely by the wrath of a powerful storm. Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico on Sep. 20, 2017, and the effects of the powerful category 5 storm are still being felt.

Seventh-day Adventists in the Dominican Republic recently celebrated the 100th anniversary of the church. Church leaders and members alike celebrated the exponential growth since the Adventist message began on the island.
“Today is a memorable day for the Seventh-day Adventist Church here as we see how the flame of our message has expanded throughout these 100 years in the country,” said Pastor Cesario Acevedo, president of the church in the Dominican Republic, while at the Mella Adventist Church in Santo Domingo, last December.

A Seventh-day Adventist leadership summit emphasized that unity is needed to finish the church’s mission of spreading the gospel and overwhelmingly endorsed the unity described by Jesus in John 17.
Unity is a key issue among church leaders as the General Conference, the administrative body of the world church, contends with several units that are not in compliance with voted policies.

The Seventh-day Adventist Church in Inter-America continued on the heels of its recently launched Year of the Child and Adolescent with the unveiling of its new Vacation Bible School program last week.
More than 160 children’s and adolescent ministries directors from across the Inter-American Division (IAD) territory gathered for a two-day workshop in Miami, Florida, on Jan. 31 to Feb. 1, to reaffirm their commitment to one of its strongest outreach programs of the year.

The Seventh-day Adventist Church in Nicaragua recently inaugurated a brand new facility for its Adventist Hospital in Estelí, Nicaragua. The facility becomes the only private hospital in the city, located 150 kilometers north of Managua—the capital city.
The Jan. 9 inauguration ceremony drew city officials and community and church leaders.

Seventh-day Adventist pastors, leaders and communicators got a glimpse last week of the new website that the Inter-American Division’s communication department will be launching soon.
The preview of the website was featured during a CommSessions event. The new website will continue to feature news, more stories, more resources, all adapted to the church’s latest identity guideline system.
